Don’t throw that stale bread away. Give it a second life with these four recipes.
There are a lot of places to get great, unique burgers in Mississippi.
After featuring some spots in south Mississippi, it’s on to central Mississippi — primarily the Jackson metro area.
I can’t list them all, but here are a few favorites to try.
Hall of Fame in Bentonia
I haven’t sampled the burgers here, but a strong recommendation from former a food magazine editor friend is all I needed to hear. Further research from among Yazoo County folks seconded her claim. A humble wooden building adds atmosphere to a lineup of thick, juicy homemade burgers named after some of the state’s best football pros. Sampling the Willie Brown burger topped with fried onions is on my agenda in the very near future.
A little further south, the Blue Rooster has been delighting burger fans for years with its gigantic, juicy creations. Perhaps its most famous offering is the Flame Thrower. It’s the only burger I’ve ever seen that’s topped with sirloin steak for good measure. If you’re a beef lover, this one’s for you.

Burgers & Blues pairs a lineup of delicious burgers with music. My favorite burger is the Lea & Perrins – I mean, what could be better than a burger marinated in the tangy sauce? A close second is the Hwy. 61 Bacon & Blue topped with blue cheese.
This is strictly a nostalgia-based choice. The Scrooge-Burger has been one of my favorites since my early days in Jackson. It’s a juicy burger topped with bacon, melted cheeses, sautéed onions, mushroom gravy and more. It’s a classic that has withstood the test of time.
Now famous for its crispy chicken, I first visited Rooster’s (now in Fondren) many years ago in another location to check out its burgers. I wasn’t disappointed then and in my opinion, Rooster’s burgers, including my pick, the bacon cheeseburger, have improved with age.

I can’t compile a Jackson-area burger list without including CS’s. A stalwart in the Jackson restaurant scene for decades, the burger menu at CS’s in Jackson is less evolved, but equally popular. Most go straight to the Inez Burger, topped with a homemade chili sauce. Unlike some restaurateurs whose legendary recipes are a closely guarded secret, the owner once shared his recipe with me. A mixture of homemade chili, nacho cheese sauce and jalapeño peppers is poured over a burger that’s been the favorite for thousands of Mississippians for decades.
Finding a great burger in the suburbs is now a reality, thanks to the 12 offerings at this small burger place south of Jackson. They all look appetizing, but my pick is the house burger, an All-American version filled with a juicy burger and all the fixings.
