Irrfan Khan’s wife Sutapa Sikdar asks to legalise CBD oil in India – Mumbai Mirror

Mumbai: Irrfan Khan’s wife Sutapa Sikdar on Tuesday appealed to legalise the usage and consumption of CBD oil in India, while reminiscing the time the late actor was undergoing treatment.

She shared a picture of the London hospital where Irrfan was being treated for neuroendocrine tumour — a rare kind of cancer — and wrote, “London revist looking at his hospital room from outside like everytime I did while he was there walking alone #wishyouwerethere #cancerpain #LegalizeCBDoilinindia (sic).”

Sutapa’s appeal comes on the heels of the criticism which Rhea Chakraborty received after leaked WhatsApp chats suggested that she administered CBD oil to Sushant Singh Rajput while he was alive.

What is CBD oil?

Cannabidiol, or CBD oil, is extracted from the leaves of the cannabis plant. It has various medicinal properties and is used for its pain-relieving effects, reducing anxiety and to treat depression. It is also administered in various cancer-related treatments.

Sushant Singh Rajput death: Experts find no trace of poison or chemicals

A panel of forensic experts from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi, whose help on medico-legal aspects had been sought by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in its probe related to the Sushant Singh Rajput suicide case, allegedly found no presence of organic poison or toxic chemicals in

Is CBD oil illegal in India?

No. While Cannabis is deemed illegal in India under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic (NDPS) Act, 1985. However, a few contents extracted from the cannabis plant have been excluded from the Act and are legal in India, provided the guidelines that have been put down are followed.

For example, the cannabis leaves and flowers are used to make bhaang, a popular drink in India, and it is very much legal. Similarly, CBD oil is a 40 per cent extract of the cannabis plant. But here’s the catch: CBD oil has a component called THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). While there is no problem if the THC content in the CBD oil is less than 0.3 per cent, if the proportion of the component exceeds 0.3 per cent, it falls in the category of cannabis and thus becomes illegal under the NDPS Act.

The major issue that arises here is that most of the CBD oil which is sold online does not mention the content description, and hence, there is no way of finding out if the product carries THC content higher or lower than 0.3 per cent.

Rhea’s case has ‘small connection to Sushant’s death’: NCB

The Narcotics Control Bureau has told the Bombay High Court that the case in which actor Rhea Chakraborty, her brother Showik and the late Sushant Singh Rajput’s two employees have been arrested has only a “small connection with the actor’s death”. The submission was made by the Additional Solicitor General (ASG)

Meanwhile, before Sutapa, other celebrities like Richa Chadha and Sona Mohapatra had also spoken about the benefits of CBD oil and cannabis in general. While Sona had said that she came to know about the benefits when her sister underwent treatment for cancer last year, Richa had said that cannabis is one of the five sacred plants mentioned in the Atharvaveda due to the benefits it has.

The Mumbai Dabbawalas also remembered how they shared a special connection with Irrfan Khan thanks to the film.
